Coatings and Ink China – the leading market magazine published by Ringier Trade Media – has recently announced the winners of the 2011 Ringier Technology Innovation Awards for the Coatings Industry. Ringier Technology Innovation Awards are regarded as the most important awards in China’s coatings industry.

Ringier Technology Innovation Awards encourage, acknowledge and reward those individuals and companies who introduce and develop a new idea, a new method, a new product or technology. Ringier Trade Media organizes the Innovation Awards to reward innovators.

The grand Awards ceremony and cocktail party was held at the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel on June 14, 2011. More than 180 high-level delegates from winning companies such as Evonik, DuPont Titanium, LANXESS, BYK Solutions and Air Products together with professionals from authoritative associations, delegates from the China Coatings Summit, Ringier magazine readers and industry media attended the Awards ceremony. Winners shared their latest innovative technologies which drive development in China’s coatings industry.

The panel of judges who presented the Awards to winners included Prof. Yang Xianghong, Purchasing Director of AkzoNobel Solvent Asia & AkzoNobel Industrial Coatings China; Mr. Wang Huawen, Technical Director of Bauhinia Paints; Prof. Lin Xuanyi, Chief Engineer & Senior Engineer of Shanghai Sto Ltd., Members of Expert Committee of China National Coatings Industry Association; Mr. Le Huiming, Consultant & Deputy General Secretary of Coating Committee CSEA; Peter C. Chiang, Ph.D., Vice-Chairman of Foxconn Technology Group Surface Treatment Technical Committee;

In 2010, the total output of coatings manufactured in China reached 9.7 million tons. This was an increase of 23% over 2009, catapulting China to the No.1 market position in the world in terms of production output. However, although overall output has soared, ironically, high value-added coatings products did not and innovative product development has not developed fast enough in China. Innovation can change this.

“The bottom line is this award is designed to drive innovation in China’s coatings industry” said Mr. Mike Hay, President of Ringier Trade Media. Mr. Hay also stressed the huge difference between Ringier Technology Innovation Awards and other industry awards present in the market. “One of the most important elements in any Awards Program is that it must be honest, it must be fair, and it must be transparent and that it truly identifies in our case Innovation. Our judging process is completely neutral, objective and fair.” Mr. Hay added, “First of all, it is the independent panel of experts – the judges who play the key role in the selection of the winners, that is the one important features that make the Ringier Industry Innovation Awards special and different from other such programs in China. These judges cannot be bought, we cannot be bought – nominations are open to everybody in the industry and the final winners are selected solely on their merit – and nothing more.”

More than 60 products and types of technology were nominated including big international brands like Evonik, LANXESS, DSM, DOW, and distinguished local companies, such as Zhejiang Ruicheng, Insirht High, Youngbio Chemical.

The representative of the panel of judges, Prof. Yang Xianghong, Purchasing Director of Akzonobel Solvent Asia & Akzonobel Industrial Coatings China said, “All the nominations have gone through a third-party judging panel consisting of industry experts. 27 winners including ACEMATT 3600 of Evonik Degussa, Air Products EnviroGem 360, Lubrizol New Self-Crosslinking NMP-free PUDs received the prestigious awards.”

In 2012, Ringier plans to have an expanded Innovation Awards coverage with more categories, nominates and winners. Each year, Ringier also organizes Ringier Technology Innovation Awards in metalworking, plastics, food & beverage, packaging, personal care and cosmetics industries.
