International Plastics News for China – the leading market magazine published by Ringier Trade Media – has recently announced the winners of the 2011 Ringier Technology Innovation Awards for the Plastics Industry. 34 winning companies feature their innovative product and technology categorized into Materials & Auxiliaries, Injection Molding Technology, Extrusion Technology, Blow Molding Technology, Molds & Components, Material Handling, Measurement & Testing, Automation, Application Innovative Technologies and Auxiliary Equipment (Parts).

The grand Awards ceremony and cocktail party was held in Shenzhen China on August 23, 2011, in conjunction with the 6th Plastics Technology Application in Consumer Electronic Products Conference. More than 120 high-level delegates from winning companies such as Borouge, PolyOne, Haitian International, Demag, S+S and Coperion together with professionals from authoritative associations, conference delegates, Ringier magazine readers and industry media attended the Awards ceremony. Winners shared their latest innovative technologies which drive development in China’s plastics industry.

Since its launch in 2006, the Ringier Technology Innovation Awards have encouraged, acknowledged and rewarded those individuals and companies who have introduced and developed a new idea, a new method, or a new product or technology. The event is composed of three steps: nomination, judging and the award-presentation ceremony. “The bottom line is that these Awards are designed to drive innovation in China’s plastics industry”, said Mr. Mike Hay, President of Ringier Trade Media.

Mr. Hay also emphasized the difference between the Ringier Technology Innovation Awards and other industry awards present in the market by stating: “One of the most important elements in any Awards Program is that it must be honest, it must be fair, and it must be transparent and that it truly identifies -in our case – Innovation. Our judging process is completely neutral, objective and fair. First of all, it is the independent panel of experts – the judges who play the key role in the selection of the winners that is one important feature that makes the Ringier Industry Innovation Awards special and different from other such programs in China. These judges cannot be bought, we cannot be bought – nominations are open to everybody in the industry and the final winners are selected solely on their merit – and nothing more. Moreover, Ringier Plastics Innovation Awards is the only Award that not only focuses on the suppliers who introduce the products or technologies but recognizes end users that show Innovation in their manufacturing process and or product design.”

This year’s Awards were a success for three reasons. Firstly, the Awards had 65 entries and 17 new winners. Compared with last year, the number of entries increased by 30%, showing a positive trend that many more manufacturers have started using innovation in their product design. Secondly, a new Awards category was added - Application Innovative Technologies.

This category awarded manufacturers who significantly improved their plastic processing so as to achieve energy savings, environmental friendliness and material savings as well as have better and consistent product quality and design. Thirdly, local companies accounted for two-third of the Award winners this year, justifying that the plastic industry in China has been able to keep pace with international brands and in some cases improve on them.

Mr. Hay continued: “This year we witnessed that innovation is very much market driven. For example: the increased market demand for machinery with improved energy efficiency and automation is a direct response to the soaring energy prices and labor costs in China. Today, the market is also demanding better biodegradable and eco-friendly materials to comply with more stringent environmental regulations.”

The panel of judges and market professionals who presented the Awards to winners included Mr. Chen Xinjie, Secretary-general of Shantou Plastic Commerce Committee; Mr. Chen Xiazong, Member of Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), Founding Chairman of Society of Advanced Molding Technology (SAMT); Mr. Charles Hsu, Director of Society, Advanced Molding Technology (SAMT) and Managing Director of MoldZen Precision Co., Ltd.; Mr. Zhong Wenren, Department Director, School of Mechanical Engineering Chung Yuan Christian University; Mr. Zheng Wenge, Researcher of Ningbo Institute of Material Technology & Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Next year’s Awards will be held in Shanghai on August 16, 2012.
