Evolution of coatings sector in Indonesia

In South East Asia, Indonesia is the largest market for paints and coatings given its huge population. The Indonesia paints & coatings market is projected to grow annually by 6.47% during the period of 2023 to 2032, acquiring a revenue share of US$4.24 billion by 2030, according to a report by Inkwood Research. The market growth in Indonesia is fueled by key drivers, such as the economic reforms introduced by the government, the rapidly-emerging construction, building and infrastructure sectors, strong demand for packaging and household products, among others.

A shift in Indonesia's coatings sector pushes toward the manufacture of greener and healthier goods. Lead-free, chromium-free, water-based, low-odor, and low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints are among the innovations that fall under this category. Nonetheless, there are a number of issues that must be resolved. The first difficulty is the price volatility of raw materials, which has an impact on the production cost as a whole. The second difficulty is the Covid-19 pandemic's effect on the supply chain disruption. In addition, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has increased uncertainty worldwide, which has affected oil prices. Shipping expenses and the cost of solvents and other related products are subsequently impacted by this. Local governments are anticipated to implement lead-free paint usage laws in response to these issues.

The recently concluded 2024 ASEAN Coating Innovation and Technology Development Conference on July 23-24 in Jakarta, Indonesia, was aimed at helping address the aforementioned issues and providing a variety of environmental considerations that paint manufacturers can take to reduce the environmental impact of their operations. The Summit was supported by leading associations such as the Indonesian Coatings Association (ASCOATINDO), Indonesian Society for Quality (ISQ), Indonesian Standardization Society (MASTAN), and Indonesian Corrosion Association (INDOCOR). With the theme “Technological Innovation and Eco-Friendly Coatings,” presentations from the most impactful, and forward-thinking leaders shaping the industry today highlighted the recent technology and techniques in the production and application of high-performance coatings.

The Summit primarily focused on discussions pertaining to construction, architectural and furniture decorative coatings and paints. The agenda encompassed a wide range of topics, including the introduction of innovative products in the coatings industry within the Asia-Pacific region, the sharing of successful coating application cases, the demonstration of various functional additive applications and techniques in coatings and painting, and the exploration of advancements in coating research and development processes.

The event was also supported by business partners Shanghai Farfly Energy Technology Company, Shanghai Innovy Chemical New Materials Company, Ashland and Dow Chemical, whose booths attracted the delegates into learning more about their products.

On the first day of the conference, delegates learned a great deal from presentations that were jam-packed with information about various topics related to the manufacturing of coatings and paintings.Mr. Adiwan Djohanli, the representative of ASCOATINDO and the CEO of PT. Kelie Chemical World, opened the morning discussion with his presentation about paint and coating applicators, where he provided technical knowledge on how to apply the paints and coatings. He said 90% of paint failure is because of the wrong application due to very limited training, courses, and standardized education for paints and coatings applicators.

With more than 18 years of sales experience for mixing equipment and domestic and foreign coatings industry, the Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Farfly Energy Technology Company, Ms. Qian Na, introduced FARFLY company and its products comprised of all kinds of mixers for different viscosity. It also introduced the high efficiency nano mill, and fully automatic production line, like the powder feeding and additives feeding solutions.

Mr. Moch Malik, the Founder and Chairman of partner association ISQ, talked about the strategies that companies must obtain to meet today’s standard. He explored how standardization promotes efficiency, sustainability, and market acceptability in coating technologies through case studies and industry perspectives. He also encouraged the delegates to join ISQ to stay updated on the latest standards in Quality, Health, Environment, Sustainability, Compliance, Anti-Bribery, Energy, Cyber Security, and Information Security.

Mr. Soe Kram of Nusantara Parkerizing presented the nano coating technology as conversion coating for metal finish in the architectural segment. He highlighted the importance of conversion coating in painting applications to increase painting performance and how nano coating technology was developed to solve environmental problems.

Ms. June Ng from Dow Chemical, one of the world’s leading materials science companies, delves into its commitment to building a more sustainable future through developing next generation coating solutions. She also presented Dow’s wide range of technology that enables tailored performance for industrial finishes including coatings on metal and flooring which offers good durability.

During the afternoon session, Ms. Evridha Raevdha Nurmansya, the Research and Development Manager of Epoxyndo Art Lestari, introduced methods and coating applications for preventive and corrective maintenance for corrosion and leak repair in oil and gas pipeline and civil constructions.

Mr. Pandu Setioning Negoro, the Technical Support and Service of Jotun Indonesia, tackled the risk of fire, be it cellulosic or hydrocarbon fire. He discussed the special coatings, which are well-known as passive fire protection that can play a great role in terms of protecting what matters more. Mr. Gito Hermanto, the Director of Ladang Kimia, provided knowledge on electroplating and multilayer thickness coating uses. He also introduced the macdermid biography and scope of market electroplating and other surface treatments.

Mr. Syaiful Arif Wicaksono from Allnex Resins Indonesia ended the day’s session with his presentation on additives. He explained how additives enhance the performance of paint formulations by modifying rheological properties, improving flow and leveling, reducing foam, improving pigment dispersibility, accelerating cure and crosslinking, improving adhesion and reducing defects.

The second day of the Summit continued to deliver interesting presentations. Dr. Ir. Supandi, the Director of MASTAN, explores the pivotal role of standardization in advancing coating technology towards excellence and future development. Standardization, he said, not only enhances product quality and consistency but also fosters innovation and global competitiveness.

The Director and President of Futanlux Paint, Mr. Jeffry Chandra Tjorawinata, provided a technical presentation about polyurea coating systems, where he showcased its edge when it comes to characteristics, composition, advantages and more. Futanlux Paint was established in 1992 ready to meet the needs of various activities, both architecture, automotive, and other industries that require paint protective material.

The two-day session concluded with a raffle draw where four delegates won exciting prizes. The first two winners were drawn by Mr. Malik and Mr. Ade Rahmatullah from ISQ, and the last two winners were announced by Mr. Djohanli from ASCOATINDO and Miss June Ng from Dow.

The Summit was capped off with a factory visit at Danapaint, where the delegates were welcomed by its Technical General Manager, Ms. Ma. Yudi Priyanti. The delegates were allowed to witness first hand its process of paint production — from selecting their raw materials, mixing and blending, grinding and milling to packaging and shipping. Ms. Priyanti not only gave a wealth of knowledge to the delegates but also encouraged them to provide comments and suggestions for Danapaint to even more improve their processes. Along with the Ringier Events, the partner associations expressed their gratitude to Danapaint for the opportunity to visit the company’s facilities.
